Hello,

I'm Cat Moon!

Consulting Psychologist

My Story

Catherine “Cat” Moon, LCSW, comes to CM/A+A as a Therapeutic Consultant to support CM/A+A’s vision to advance the mental health of youth, including LGBTQ+ youth. As a mental health therapist, Cat has over ten years of experience serving people suffering from personality disorders and complex trauma. Cat is currently the Founder and Owner of a private group practice, East Atlanta Counseling Services (EAC).

While at the University of Georgia, Cat received a bachelor’s in English Literature from the Honors Program. Cat's interest in psychological analysis, passion for undergraduate community service work, and the personal impact of a loved one’s suicide led her to pursue a Master’s in Social Work at UGA with a certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Cat has previously worked at Samaritan Counseling Center of Athens, Bread for Life, Lullwater Counseling, and Skyland Trail, one of the top ten psychiatric residential facilities in the U.S. At Skyland Trail, Moon began working as a therapist primarily to young adults diagnosed with personality disorders, such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Cat recognized that many clients given the diagnosis of BPD had experienced significant levels of invalidation and trauma in childhood and adolescence. Additionally, many clients also identified as members of the LGBTQ+ community. Due to this, Cat pursued trainings in Gender and Sexual Minority Competence with a focus on understanding the experiences and unique mental health challenges of those who identified as non-binary and transgender. In 2015, she and a group of colleagues created a taskforce to advocate for their clients and loved ones accommodations, such as having access to private, non-gendered bathrooms.

Today, Cat serves as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and is passionate about teaching skills of emotion regulation and self-compassion, especially to those in the LGBTQ+ community who may have experienced significant invalidation and even trauma due to their identity. Noticing the common theme of trauma in her clientele, Cat pursued advanced trainings in trauma, such as EMDR, to help support clients overcome symptoms of PTSD. Cat also has extensive training in suicide prevention, and it is a passion of hers to help clients move from suicidality to a place of self-compassion and hope.

Cat's practice, EAC, serves metro Atlanta clients from ages 8 and up over three locations and 14 clinicians, specializing in DBT and EMDR therapies to treat mental health issues such as PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, depression, and suicidality. EAC also offers low-cost and sliding scale services to support clientele of any means. Cat has co-led a weekly DBT group consistently for the past 11 years which is inclusive of all genders and allows for low-cost options to make these skills more accessible to all people.

Cat is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) by Behavioral Tech, Level 1 and Level 2 trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) by the EMDR Institute, currently pursuing EMDRIA certification, in process of becoming a Approved Clinician Supervisor (ACS) and is extensively trained in LivingWorks’s ASIST Suicide Prevention and Suicide2Hope protocols.
